A Boatload Of Fun As Visitors Soak Up Sunshine At The Palm Beach Boat Show

Despite wet weather Thursday to kick off the Palm Beach International Boat Show, Saturday was a perfect day out on the docks.

Visitors to the 32nd edition of the show could see and tour more than $1 billion worth of boats, yachts and water toys along Flagler Drive on a breezy, warm day in West Palm Beach. Conditions for the final day of the show today are expected to be similar: partly cloudy with a 10 percent chance of rain and a forecast high of 79 degrees.

“I’m glad the weather held out,” said Greg Bates, who came from Boca Raton for his first boat show. “So far, so good.”

Bates was standing in the shade of a tree near Meyer Amphitheatre, where tables and chairs were set up for visitors. Toward the stage, a woman floated through the sky on a Flyboard, a hover-board propelled by water jets, as fans watched from the shade.

“That’s the first time I’ve ever seen anything like that,” West Palm Beach resident Mark Greenwood said of the new water sport. “I would get on it.”

It was his first visit to the show and he liked its convenience compared with the boat shows in Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

“This is a lot smaller, but it seems easier to park and get around,” he said.

Mike Davis and Laura Griffin both agreed with Greenwood.

“There’s easier access at this one,” Davis said. They were at the show from Vero Beach shopping for a 40- to 50-foot cruiser. “There’s a couple we’re looking at. No decisions yet.”

Kevin Ralph, a sales broker with Worth Avenue Yachts, said that isn’t unusual. People tend to buy on the last day of the shows.

“It’s a little premature for big sales,” Ralph said Saturday afternoon. His brokerage brought 15 boats ranging from 60 feet to 165 feet, but he’s happy to be in Palm Beach. “This is our home turf … It’s always a good show.”
