3 Reasons To Replace An Older Thermostat

3 Reasons To Replace An Older Thermostat

The thermostat is the only part of the heating and air conditioning systems you really interact with. So by now, you may have gotten used to the settings or perhaps the little peculiarities of the controls. Many people keep the same thermostat around for years, even after major heating repairs or even system replacements.

But if you have an older thermostat that has not been replaced for quite a while—perhaps not since before you moved in—it’s time to consider moving on. You can get a thermostat that is much easier to navigate or has far more options than you’re working with now.

Here are three reasons we think you should trade up.

#1: Manual Thermostats Are Not Known for Accuracy

A manual thermostat is any thermostat that you set manually, using a dial or sliding switch. Often, it’s tough to see where things line up. Is the switch set to 76° or 77°? Do the marks on the dial really line up with 70°?

And while you may only be about 1° or 2° off when this type of confusion sets in, that can really make a difference. You may continuously run back to the thermostat to make further adjustments, something that can take its toll on your furnace or air conditioner, wearing down the parts faster. Plus, furnaces and central AC units use up a lot of energy, and you want to conserve as much as possible.

A thermostat with a digital display makes it so that there are never any questions about whether the temperature you see on the thermostat is correct—and that means fewer struggles with the thermostat and less strain on the system. Plus, a programmable thermostat with a digital display means you have even more ways to save.

#2: Your Old Thermostat Could Be Lacking the Programming You Need

If you have a manual thermostat, you definitely don’t have any advanced programming to work with. However, even many digital thermostats are limited in how much you can program. Some very old digital thermostats do not allow you to make any changes in the temperature ahead of time.

According to the Department of Energy, you could save up to 10% per year on heating and cooling costs by setting your thermostat up 7-10° for 8 hours each day in the cooling season and down 10° in the heating season.

With a programmable thermostat, you can ensure that you always make this adjustment by presetting the thermostat to adjust in this manner when you plan to be away or asleep. Of course, you can adjust a manual thermostat in this way as well, but many people simply forget to, and a programmable thermostat takes away that worry.

#3: Today’s Thermostats Are Smarter Than Ever

Today, thermostats have the ability to adjust automatically according to your preferences—without you having to do much work at all. Learning thermostats with Wi-Fi capabilities are able to study and remember your heating and cooling habits and preferences within about a week and find the most preferable, efficient settings for you.

But that’s not the only benefit of a new Wi-Fi thermostat, or “smart thermostat.” You are able to make changes to the temperature no matter where you are, as long as you have a smart phone, tablet, or computer with internet access. Call your local technicians for more information.
