Decrease Your Property Taxes In Florida By Filing For Homestead Exemption

If you're new to Florida, you may not know that if you file for Homestead Exemption, your tax bill will go down.  It's quite simple, actually.  However, the discount is not automatic.  The first thing you should do is become informed by going to and read what the criteria is.  Basically, the property you are seeking a reduction for must be your permanent residence in Florida.  Secondly, you must have owned the property beginning January 1, and the application is due to the appraiser by March 1st of the same year.  In addition to getting a property tax deduction of $50,000 for a married couple, filing for homestead exemption, "the assessment on your home cannot increase by more than the lesser of the change in the Consumer Price index or 3% each year, no matter how much the just value increases."
