A small area in Southwest Florida wants to make history by creating a town that is completely powered by the sun. Developers Kitson & Partners recently unveiled plans to develop the world’s first solar-powered town.
Babcock Ranch is the nation’s largest development under construction, but it’ll soon also be able to tout that it’s the first solar-powered town too. Phase one of the development is set to be completed in 2017 and will accommodate 1,100 residents.
When built out, the development will be able to accommodate 50,000 people and boast 19,500 residences, a downtown, and 6 million square feet of commercial and community space.
“Babcock Ranch will exemplify what it means to be a town of the future, offering residents a highly unique balance of the most technologically advanced infrastructure and amenities, with ready access to a rich natural environment and a true sense of community,” says Syd Kitson, Kitson & Partners Chairman and CEO. “Less than a year from today, the first residents will be settling into a whole new way of life, one that is conscientious, engaging and connected.”
A 443-acre solar power plant, which will be located in Babcock Ranch, will power the entire town.
“We’ve been working hard to cost-effectively bring more emissions-free universal-scale solar to Florida for more than 10 years,” FPL president and CEO Eric Silagy says.
