Mosquitoes are a buzz kill during barbeques and backyard parties. Constant whining, itchy bites and the possibility of diseases like the Zika virus make these insects one of the worst pests.
Prep Your Property - Before the party, clean up debris and trim overgrown bushes and trees to minimize places for mosquitoes to lurk. Empty any containers with standing water like bird baths, pet bowls and flower pot saucers. Think about introducing fish that eat mosquito larvae in your pond or water feature. Protect your ponds, gutters and other areas of standing water with a product like Mosquito Dunks®. It contains a special bacteria that kills mosquito larvae but is not toxic to people and pets.
Make Sure Guests Come Prepared - Encourage your guests to wear long, loose white-colored clothing as it’s the least attractive to mosquitoes. At the same time, avoid wearing scented products like perfumes and lotions which can make people seem more delicious to these blood-thirsty pests.
Wear Insect Repellent - Have insect repellent available for guests to protect themselves. Always read the label carefully before applying, and put sunscreen on first before bug spray. Don’t feel comfortable with DEET? There are some natural oils like lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint and cedarwood that are said to have mosquito-repelling properties. You can also use products with permethrin on clothing, tents and other gear to not only repel, but kill mosquitoes. Just make sure you read the label thoroughly before applying.
Protect The Party Area - Keep mosquitoes away from your deck or patio with citronella candles or lanterns. The jury is still out on how well these candles work, and it’s important to remember that they can melt easily in the sun. You can also try mosquito coils. These pyrethrum-coated coils are almost like an incense that you can burn to repel mosquitoes. Positioning some fans outside to keep air moving can also deter mosquitoes.
Hire A Pest Professional - Call in the big guns by contacting a professional to treat your property. They can treat the perimeter of your lawn as well as under shrubs, around eaves and near standing water. While the treatment will last for a few weeks, it’s best to have your property treated monthly.
