Some time ago Cindyand I had a short sale that unfortunately we were not able to sell.It went into foreclosure. Months later we got a call from a concernedfather. He had found our old listing on one of the real estatewebsites. Her daughter had given almost $3,000 to a person thatrepresented themselves as working for the buyer. She was going torent the apartment but when she went to move in the keys didn’twork and the “agent” was no where to be found. What happened isthat the “fake” agent found a foreclosure, gained access and thenadvertised the property for rent on Craigslist.
Understand that manylegitimate agents, including Cindy and myself, advertise ourproperties on Craigslist. For some market segments it’s actuallyquite effective. However there are Craigslist trolls out there sohere are a couple of things to watch out for.
First, ignore theironline presence. Everyone is on the internet and I was actually ableto get on this guy’s site. It was actually nicer than ours. Howeverwhere is the persons office? If they always meet you somewhere redflags should start blowing.
Second, go onwww.myfloridalicense.com.You can search by name and see if the person is actually licensed.Anyone can get a business card with any name on it but it never hurtsto check.
Third, don’t givecash. Realtors HATE cash. The LAST thing I want is for a client togive me a couple of thousand dollars that I have to carry around andbe responsible for. Scammers on the other hand LOVE cash. They willgive a reason that’s perfectly logical why you have to give themcash BUT DON’T BELIEVE IT. If there is some legitimate reason thatyou need to make a cash deposit only do it in the office, in front ofa bunch of people and get a receipt. Do NOT let them meet you at acoffee shop because “it’s closer”.
Craigslist can be aneffective tool for finding your new home or apartment but please becareful to protect yourself.
If you need helpbuying or selling real estate I hope you will give me a call.

Joseph Schneider went above and beyond the capacity of a realtor. He facilitated in making the process of us purchasing our first home less stressful because of his knowledge and experience. Joseph made sure that every aspect of our transaction was handled in a professional and timely manner. Whatever we asked for in our search for the perfect home, he made sure that he did his due diligence. Joseph was referred to us and we would most definitely refer him to anyone who is looking to purchase or sell a home."
