WaWa Is Planned For GreenAcres Fl

GREENACRES — A Wawa convenience store with eight gas pumps has been proposed for the southwest corner of Lake Worth and South Jog roads where a gas station and mattress store now stand.

“That would help reinvigorate that corner,” said Planning and Engineering Director Tom Lanahan. “People are moving through there all the time.”

Bohler Engineering, the Boca Raton civil engineering firm that specializes in commercial site development and which is the agent for Wawa, is requesting the city annex five parcels totalling about 4.09 acres. It’s also asking to change the future land use from Palm Beach County commercial high to Greenacres commercial and to change the zoning from county general commercial to city commercial intensive.

The company would need a special exception to build a convenience store with gas pumps.

The plan is to build 5,943-square-foot store with a 6,090-square-foot gas canopy.

A Wawa convenience store and gas station is proposed for the southwest corner of Lake Worth and South Jog roads in Greenacres. The proposal is under review by city staff.

City staff received the initial proposal in June for the zoning and annexation work, Lanahan said. Site plan information was added in August.

Lanahan said the proposal could go before the City Council in December, but that timeframe isn’t certain.

The city submitted its comments last month, asking for clarification on signs and landscaping. The biggest concern, however, was traffic flow, Lanahan said.

“That’s a pretty busy intersection and that’s part of why they want to be there,” he said. “But we have to make sure putting a new business there doesn’t hurt neighboring properties.”

Lanahan said the county’s traffic division had the same concerns.

Bohler is working on resolving those issues, Lanahan said.

A call to John Lapointe, a principal at Bohler, was not returned.

Wawa, a Pennsylvania-based company started in 1964 and known for its hoagies, got approval in July to build a convenience store and gas station just east of the Palm Beach International Airport in West Palm Beach.

The company has more than 645 retail stores (more than 365 selling gas) in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Central Florida.

The West Palm Beach Wawa would be the first in the county. Earlier this year, the gas station chain was named one of the best place to fuel up by consumers.

In January, the company announced plans to open dozens of stores in Palm Beach and Broward counties during the next five years. The chain’s only Florida stores are near Tampa, Orlando and Fort Myers.

Lanahan said a Wawa would be a good fit in Greenacres.

“It’s very modern and has lots of food offerings,” he said.
